What is the best way to cook and eat asparagus?

In our opinion, the best way to cook and eat asparagus is to roast it in the oven. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200ºC). Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus and lay them on a baking sheet, season with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil. Bake for 10-15 minutes until lightly browned and easily pierced with a fork. Enjoy asparagus simply with a squeeze of lemon juice or as part of a main dish.

What goes well with asparagus?

Some popular dishes that go well with asparagus include roasted potatoes, roasted mushrooms, quinoa, couscous, pasta, rice, salad, grilled fish, and chicken.

FAQs

What is the best way to cook and eat asparagus? ›

Asparagus is great quickly stir-fried or sautéed over high heat. You could sauté spears in butter or olive oil with delicious results, but throwing some chopped herbs or sliced chiles into the pan adds wonderful flavor. Both of these methods produce juicy asparagus that retains its crunch.

Does asparagus get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

Does asparagus get softer the longer you cook it? Yes, it does. But you don't want to cook it too long or it will be soggy. That's fine when using in a soup, but not so much as a roasted side.

How do you cook asparagus so it doesn't get soggy? ›

Overcooking It

Because it only takes a few minutes to cook, keep a close eye on it to avoid soggy, limp stems as the outcome. To avoid overcooking, take it out of the oven or off the stove a minute or so before you think it's done. Another way to prevent overcooking is to shock the asparagus in an ice bath.

Why do you soak asparagus in water? ›

I soak all asparagus first in cold water. I trim the ends and then rinse the stalks and let them sit in cold water for five minutes. It hydrates the asparagus, and they cook more quickly, for they are already wet with some moisture within them.

What is the most nutritious way to eat asparagus? ›

No matter what type of diet you follow, one of the healthiest ways to eat asparagus is cooking it in the oven on high heat. Drizzled with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice, roasted asparagus cooked in a hot oven becomes tender, sweet, and full of flavor.

How do restaurants do asparagus? ›

So here's the simple method I borrowed from restaurant kitchens: Parcook the spears, then quickly saute them in a small amount of olive oil. With a quick sprinkling of salt and pepper, it's done. I knew I'd come up with a winner when my husband asked what I had done to make the asparagus taste so good.

Should you wash asparagus before cooking? ›

In answer to, “Do you have to wash asparagus before cooking?” the answer is most definitely yes. Remember, asparagus shoots up through dirt and fertilizer. Birds who have just eaten a bunch of berries fly over the asparagus cropland and critters roam around in the wild.

What tastes better thin or thick asparagus? ›

Ferretti says there is little taste difference between thin and thick asparagus spears, but the thinner vegetables can be tougher to chew.

Which is better thin or thick asparagus? ›

The vegetable's fiber is slightly more concentrated in thinner spears. Since thick and thin spears are both good bets, choose the size that best suits your cooking method. Thicker stalks are better for broiling and roasting because they will stand up to the intense dry heat that would quickly shrivel skinnier spears.

What is the traditional way to eat asparagus? ›

Eat asparagus with your fingers. Pick it up from its larger end, not from the spear. Eat asparagus with cutlery if it is served with sauce, or with melted cheese, or as an accompaniment to a dish.

Is it better to eat asparagus raw or steamed? ›

Asparagus is a nutritious choice, whether it's cooked or raw. Try eating a combination of the two for maximum health benefits. Because, both ways of processing add fiber, antioxidants and essential nutrients to the diet. Because of its texture, cooking is the most common preparation method.

How do you cook asparagus so it's not stringy? ›

Remove woody ends: We recommend trimming off the woody ends because they're difficult to chew and result in stringy roasted asparagus. Cook at a high temperature: A higher temperature is what produces the lovely grilled flavor and al dente texture.
