Can I Crochet a Sweater as a Beginner?

I know, I know, there’s something about looking at a crochet sweater pattern when you’re a brand new crocheter that seems particularly daunting but I promise, there are plenty of crochet sweater patterns that are perfect for beginners! When it comes to crocheting garments, you don’t need to be an experienced crocheter to make something gorgeous.

While some people start learning with crochet hats or crochet scarfs, crochet sweater patterns are just as doable for your first crochet wearable!

How do I Know if a Crochet Sweater Pattern is Good for Beginners?

When it comes to trying to find out if you can handle a crochet sweater pattern there are a few things you are going to want to keep in mind.

See if a skill level is listed on the pattern. If not, check the stitches listed. Ideally, you are looking for patterns that only include basic crochet stitches that you would already know, such as chain stitches, single crochet stitches, double crochet stitches, half double crochet stitches, and slip stitches. It will also be helpful if the pattern has very little sewing as that can be a daunting task for someone who is new to crocheting.

If you are more of a visual learner, it may be helpful to also look for patterns that include a link to video tutorials for when you get stuck. While photos and schematics are always great, having a video can be a really helpful way to help you along.

It can also be helpful to find patterns that are based on simple rectangles that just need to be expanded upon. I would also stick to a pattern that’s all one color so that you’re not trying to make stripes or doing a lot of color changes for your first crochet cardigan.

A gauge swatch is so important when making something wearable. After all, you don’t want to go through all that hard work and then find out your sweater is the wrong size. However, if you’re a bit worried about gauge, making a crochet sweater that’s oversized can be a bit more forgiving. This is also a great option if you don’t want to worry too much about blocking as well.

Skills and Techniques to Help You Along the Way

First and foremost, you will need to know how to read a crochet pattern. This is an important skill to master, but you will get the hang of it with practice. Don’t be afraid to spell everything out for yourself if you need to.

For crocheting wearables, it will be important to know how to check your gauge, otherwise, it won’t line up with your body measurements correctly. So, make sure to check the gauge for every pattern and do a test swatch at the beginning.

Crochet Supplies

There are a variety of items you will need for any crochet project, and while most patterns will have a list of the skeins of yarn you will need and the size of your crochet hook, there are a few more items you will need along the way.

Yarn

Each pattern will tell you what type of yarn you should use, whether they suggest cotton yarn, acrylic yarn, chunky yarn, or something lighter. But, the yarn you will want to use is really dependent upon the reason you’re crocheting this sweater.

For something lighter, for warmer weather days, you are going to want an airy yarn like thin cotton. But, for cold weather days, a chunkier yarn will serve you better and keep you warm. Remember, though, for the same look to stick closer to the type and weight of yarn in the pattern. Cotton and wool drape differently, for instance, which would affect the finished look of your sweater.

Crochet Hook

When it comes to choosing a crochet hook size, always start with the recommended hook in the pattern to work your gauge swatch. If you aren’t getting gauge or if you are using a different yarn weight, you might need to try a different size crochet hook. I sometimes need to remind myself that the gauge swatch is the most important and not to get hung up on the fact that my hook size might not match the designer’s.

Stitch markers are an absolute game-changer for making sure you don’t get lost in your pattern. If you’ve ever made something in the round, you know just how easy it can be to lose which row you’re on.

Blocking Tools

When you make items that include granny squares or crochet garments like sweaters or cardigans, you will want to block them to ensure all the pieces are a uniform size and that your piece lays correctly.
