How to Make a Rag Heart Wreath

If you’ve ever made a rag wreath before you’re going to have no problem creating a pretty wreath in a heart form. It’s possible you have the majority of the supplies you need on hand already.

I love creating cute wreaths for my front door. I’ve shared a lot of different options over the years but this is one of the easiest.

Supplies Needed to Make a Rag Heart Wreath

This wreath is just perfect for Valentines Day.

• Strips of Fabric
• Tulle
• Wire Coat Hanger (or heart wreath form)
• Wire Cutters (optional)
• Pliers
• Rotary Cutter & Mat (or scissors)
• Hot Glue Gun
• Command Hook

DIY Heart Rag Wreath Instructions

Follow my step-by-step instructions and you’ll have your easy rag wreath done in minutes.

Step 1. I was determined to use the supplies I had at my house. I used a hanger from the dry cleaner to create my wire heart. If your hanger is hard to twist apart you can use wire cutters or pliers to untwist it or cut it apart.

If you don’t have a wire hanger stores like Hobby Lobby sell wire heart wreath forms. I have found that they’re more readily available near Valentine’s Day.

Step 2. Use your hands to bend the hanger into a heart shape. If you’re finding it hard to bend on your own use the pliers to bend it into shape. Don’t worry about the areas that look crimped from being twisted. The knots in the strip of fabric will cover all of those up.

Step 3. Use the pliers to twist the ends of the wire together to hold together the heart shape.

Prep Your Fabric

Step 4. I used about 1 yard of red with white polka dot fabric and some white tulle. You can order your fabric online or head to your local craft store. It’s totally up to you what kinds of fabric you choose to use.

You could even choose a solid red and solid white fabric and not use tulle at all. I had the red and white on hand and adding the white tulle was a fun addition.

Using a rotary cutter and mat cut a long piece of fabric about 1″ wide. I then trimmed my piece of fabric to about 8-10″ long.

If you use a wire heart form you may need more fabric because your strips may need to be longer. If you don’t have a rotary cutter you can use scissors and free hand the cuts.

How to Assemble the Heart Wreath

As I mentioned above I cut my rag strips to approximately 1″ x 8-10″. You can choose to cut your fabric any width and length you want. As you tie your strips you may decide you want them a little shorter. If that happens you can just trim them.

Step 5. Once you’ve finished cutting your fabric into strips you’ll tie them onto your form. Depending on where your wreath is going to be you can choose to tie them in a single or double knot.

If your wreath is going to be outside you may want to double knot so the wind doesn’t loosen your knots.

For my wreath, I tied three fabric strips and then one strip of tulle. It’s pretty quick to tie all the strips, turn on a favorite show and you’ll likely be done in one episode.

I recommend using scissors to cut at least the long loose threads that are likely to appear after you tie the fabric pieces.

How to Hang a Rag Wreath

Step 6. I am a huge fan of command hooks, they’re a great way to hang lightweight objects. I haven’t had any problems with them damaging the paint on my door or walls. You can try hanging your wreath just by the form itself or use a hot glue gun to attach twine to the back of the wreath and hang it from that.

I will note, last year I just hung my wreath from the heart form and while it worked the opening and closing of the door often knocked it off center so it was hanging crooked.

I love how my front door looks with my heart rag wreath, it’s the perfect pop of color for Valentine’s Day!

Final Thoughts on Making a Rag Wreath

A rag heart wreath is such a fun and inexpensive project. It’s the perfect scrap project, you could even use scraps of old clothes. You could also make a rag wreath in any shape you might want, a metal heart is a simple shape.

I was thinking it would be fun to try stringing some fairy lights into my wreath. I love a lighted wreath and fairy lights are lightweight and battery-operated so you don’t need to plug them in. A lot of them even come with a timer now.
