My heart goes out to every healthcare professional, administrator, and executive in those clinics, pharmacies, and corporate offices who were told their โposition was eliminatedโ since January. In case you didnโt hear, Walmart announced this week that they are shuttering all 51 in-store clinics and their telehealth services in the next 90 days. But theyโre not the only company in healthcare or with a healthcare division that is making the difficult decision.Walgreens recently announced it would be closing 160 of its VillageMD clinics across the country.CVS Health is closing their remaining 300 pharmacies inside Target stores.Amazon announced it will be downsizing multiple corporate offices of its One Medical division and reducing its workforce in its own pharmacy.Even Optum, a UnitedHealth Group division, is considering closing down its virtual care services.DISCLAIMER: I worked for Walmart for 13 years so that one hurt hearing about the most. Being on the receiving end of that decision is devastating. It can be a roller-coaster of emotions from fear, anxiety, and depression.I know what that feels like AND Iโve been helping clients through the process both professionally and personally. If youโve been recently impacted, I want you to know Iโm here and Iโm ready to help.At the same time, I know that delivering that news was difficult and stressful. Not only that, youโre still expected to motivate your team and ensure they continue operating at optimal-levels despite the devastation left in that decisionโs wake.I know what that feels like too AND Iโve been helping clients in leadership positions control their emotions, manage their expectations, and ensure they and their teams perform well without attrition and resentment. If youโre struggling with moving forward today because of these recent corporate decisions, I want you to know Iโm here and Iโm ready to help.Corporate decisions arenโt easy for anyone. They never have been and they never will be.Itโs how we handle ourselves and what steps we take next that matter.

Thank you for the post. Itโs a hard time for many people, struggling to accept that no matter how hard we all tried, this great experiment didnโt work. Your words hit home on how hard it is to deliver the message to the teams. Appreciate the empathy.

I am standing next to one of the most driven and dedicated students I think I've ever met.And he is JUST getting started!Meet Nathaniel Hays, a third-year student at the Midwestern University College of Pharmacy. He was selected as the recipient of my scholarship this year and his list of achievements is incredible. In addition to:- maintaining a 4.0 GPA- working as an intern 8-12 hours a week at Walgreens- serving as the Student Council Vice President as well as other leadership roles- speaking to high school students about substance use disorder- volunteering at the DuPage Pads homeless shelter- teaching ESL classes to Spanish speaking citizens in ChicagoHe is also married and raising a young son!His hard work, dedication, and efforts are remarkable. In addition to receiving my scholarship, he was also selected by the Scholarship committee to receive 3 others!I am proud of this young man and am eager to see what new heights he will achieve professionally and how he will raise the bar for healthcare professionals, administrators, and executives as well.Congratulations Nathaniel! Myself, my wife and my team at Atcha International Consulting are very proud of you.

Layoffs are still happening.Healthcare isn't immune. There's talk about closing entire departments, M&As (mergers and acquisitions) and even bankruptcy!GASP!GASP!GASP!But wait a minute....You're still in role.Your team is still intact.Your company is still conducting business as usual. It's easy to get caught up in the headlinesOr get wrapped up in the drama. What's harder to do is to:- stay focused- have a plan- recognize your skills- acquire new strengths- market yourself- grow your networkSo if or when a layoff, bankruptcy, or M&A DOES impact youYou're not caught off guard.Instead, you're prepared.I don't do drama. And I don't recommend it for you either.

As a healthcare recruitment leader and talent acquisition consultant, I can tell you that not every organization is as transparent as they should be when it comes to recruitment processes. While many in the TA space might argue that they are too busy, short-staffed, and/or overwhelmed to reach out to the very people they want to hire, some organizations choose to deliberately withhold basic communication as a means of control and power. This hurts recruiters, hiring managers, and organizations but for candidates, it is the kiss of death. So today, I'm taking a break from my usual posts and will instead, explain the process I'll be using for the two summer internship opportunities I posted this week on LinkedIn for Atcha International Consulting. In less than 48 hours, I received over 200 applicants. While over 75% met the basic qualifications, those who didn't received a rejection email. It's closure for them and they can invest their time researching and applying to other jobs. Let's call that Stage 1.For Stage 2, I plan to review and rank the remaining applicants based on what they've presented on their resume AND their LinkedIn profiles. This includes everything from their GPA, work experience, past and present student leadership roles, skills, recommendations, etc. Objective data like this allows me to make decisions based on facts, not feelings or biases.Next will come Stage 3. After I've ranked the +150 qualified applicants, I'll reach out to the top 10% (15 individuals) and invite them to record a video of themselves and upload it to a shared drive. In 180 seconds or less, they will need to deliver an elevator pitch about themselves, their relevant achievements and strengths, their reasons for wanting this internship, and why I should choose them. In this manner, I will be able to gauge and grade the quality of critical skills including: communication, organization, time-management, attention-to-detail, technology, and much more. Finally comes Stage 4, where I will select 5 people for a 30-minute virtual interview asking them a series of behavioral and situational questions and answering any questions they may have. Of the ones who impress me with their confidence, knowledge, passion, and research, only 2 will be offered a position. I think you'll agree that what I wrote isn't rocket-science. Yet, for many individuals and organizations, the idea of sharing how many people have applied, what objective data will be used as the selection criteria, what skills and strengths they will be assessed, and how few will be selected for an interpersonal interactions (one-way or two-way) indicates a To all the applicants who applied to one of my internship positions, I sincerely thank you for your interest. You are a human being just like me and you deserve, at very least, some basic courtesy and professional respect. I wish you the best of luck as I begin to review your resumes and LinkedIn profiles!

How do you say โthank youโ to those who helped you in the past? ๐คPAY! IT! FORWARD! โฉAfter I graduated from Midwestern University College of Pharmacy, I started a scholarship to help students struggling with the same challenges I did. ๐ตWhat were those challenges? Well, in addition to the rigor of the standard curriculum, they included:- Raising two children - Working a full-time job- Leading a student organization - Maintaining a presence for the familyWhile we all know that graduate school is hard. ๐Raising a family while still in graduate school is โjust a bitโ harder. ๐ Iโm proud to say that so far, the โIqbal Atcha Scholarshipโ has awarded almost $10,000 to students who struggle through similar challenges and still rise to the level of excellence in spite of their circ*mstance. ๐While I can never repay those individuals who supported and encouraged me through those difficult years, ๐คฒ๐ฝI hope that my scholarship, as well as those offered by other Midwestern alumni and sponsoring organizations, help lighten a few burdens and enhance the confidence of these deserving students. ๐If you are a Midwestern alumnus and would like to be involved with students and other alumni, connect with my friends Staci Glass and Michael Gorsline. ๐๐ฝIโd love to connect with you as well ๐ฅฐ#MWUProud#AlumniRelations#HealthcareHeroes
